歴史的意義
カハナは豊かな歴史を持つ場所です。西洋文明が島々に伝わるずっと前から、ハワイ先住民がこの地域で繁栄し、強力な農業コミュニティを形成していました。彼らは川の周りの肥沃な土地を利用し、タロイモ、グアバ、パンノキ、マンゴー、タピオカ、サトウキビ、ココナッツ、サツマイモなどの多様なトロピカルフルーツや植物を植えました。ハワイの竹林、ククイ、ハラの木々が古代の住居として使われていました。この土地はハワイ先住民の所有物でしたが、ヨーロッパ人がこの島にやって来ると、貿易、プランテーション、病気が持ち込まれ、さらには第二次世界大戦中に訓練場として使用されたため、土地の利用方法が変わりました。これらの変化は、カハナの文化的および環境的部分だけでなく、地元住民にも影響を与えました。時間が経つにつれて、地元の人々は自分たちの愛する土地の将来について不安を抱き、最終的にはその地域の保存に努める国に土地を売却しました。住民が65年間の賃貸契約を取得し、その家族がカハナを文化的生活公園として保存するのに協力するという協定が結ばれた。現在、わずか 31 世帯がカハナに住み、土地とその遺産とのつながりを保っています。

Now that you know a bit about the historical significance of the beautiful land of Kahana, it’s time to experience it for yourself! Our kayak rental process is simple, making it easy for you to explore the area on the water. When you arrive at our storefront in Kailua, our adventure guides will get you checked-in and ready for your journey. They will get you set up with your gear, and demonstrate the process of loading the kayak onto your vehicle. After that, they will give you brief instructions for your paddle and can answer any questions you may have about the tour or the area in general.
Once everything is loaded up, you’ll be all set to head to Kahana! The scenic drive offers stunning views as you drive with the shoreline to your right and majestic mountains to your left.
When you arrive at the park, there will be a parking lot on the right. From there you will unload all the gear and make your way south of the parking lot to begin your kayaking adventure at the kayak launch point, located right next to the bridge. When you are in the water and aboard your kayak, begin paddling upstream. Not too far up the river you’ll reach a fork where you will go right, leading you further upstream. Take in the sights of Kahana river! As you look around, keep an eye out for native Hawaiian plants like the Beach Hibiscus – a tree with bright yellow flowers with a deep red center. Native Hawaiians used its wood to make ‘iako (spars) for wa’a (outrigger canoes), and mouo (fishing nets).
カハナ川と湾の探索
川を遡り続けると、ちょっとした休憩や水泳に最適なロープブランコのあるスポットがいくつか見つかります。奥に進むほど、深いハワイのジャングルに深く浸っていくでしょう。木々が許す限り川を漕いで遡ることができ、最も遠い地点は、向きを変えて湾に向かう前に写真を撮ったり、泳いだりするのに最適なスポットです。
先ほど遭遇した分岐点に到達したら、別の右折してカハナ湾に漕ぎ出します。川の河口近くにはフイルア養魚池があります。島に残る 6 つの池のうちの 1 つであるフィッシュポンドは、ハワイの人々のユニークな水産養殖の実践を示しています。池に生息するアマアマやサバヒーの仲間を見つけてみましょう。
Once you enter the bay, you’ll find yourself surrounded by the Ko’olau mountains, this is a prime spot to continue exploring, swimming, and paddling as you take in the sights the Bay has to offer.
