🛶 Kayak & Gear Rentals

How does the self-serve kayak rental work?

Our self-serve rental is simple and efficient: Book online or by phone → arrive at our Kailua shop (134B Hamakua Dr) at your scheduled time → check in and sign a digital waiver → get fitted with properly sized life vest, paddle, and seat back → receive a 5-10 minute orientation covering route tips, tide conditions, safety zones, and how to load gear → we load and secure the kayak on your vehicle with foam pads and straps → you drive to your chosen launch point → paddle! → return gear by your scheduled time. It's self-guided freedom with professional support and equipment. See full kayak rental details →

What's included with a kayak rental?

Every rental comes fully equipped with: sit-on-top ocean kayak (single or tandem), USCG-approved life vest properly fitted at check-in, adjustable paddle with leash, padded seat back for all-day comfort, waterproof dry bag for phone and keys, foam pads + heavy-duty cam-lock straps for vehicle transport, waterproof route map with GPS coordinates and safety tips, on-site orientation and loading assistance, and emergency phone support during your rental. We don't nickel-and-dime you for essentials. Browse all rental options →

Can I rent a kayak for multiple days?

Absolutely! Our multi-day kayak rentals run from 2 to 7 days at discounted rates. This is perfect if you're staying on Oahu for a week — keep the kayak at your vacation rental and paddle a different destination each day. Multi-day rentals include all the same premium gear as daily rentals. You can also bundle with beach chairs, snorkel gear, SUPs, and e-bikes for the ultimate island adventure kit. How do I transport the kayak on my car?

We make it easy! We provide heavy-duty foam pads and cam-lock straps that fit any 4-door vehicle — sedans, SUVs, trucks, and minivans. No roof rack needed. The straps thread through your door openings (not the windows — the actual door frames), so they're secure at highway speeds. Our team loads and secures your kayak in under 5 minutes. If you have factory or aftermarket roof racks, we use rigid rack adapters for an even faster, more secure fit. 2-door vehicles can work but are trickier — call us first. Read our full transport guide →

What if I've never kayaked before?

No experience needed! Our sit-on-top kayaks are beginner-friendly, stable, and self-bailing (water drains out automatically). For first-timers, we recommend Kailua Bay (protected by Oahu's largest barrier reef — calm, shallow, gorgeous) or Chinaman's Hat (only 500 yards across shallow reef). We provide a thorough orientation at check-in covering paddling technique, safety, and route-specific tips. Our waterproof route maps highlight safe zones and hazards. Still nervous? Call us at (808)498-1894 — we'll help you pick the perfect beginner route. Read our kayak safety guide →

Do I need a reservation?

Reservations are strongly recommended, especially during peak seasons (summer, holidays, spring break, and weekends year-round). We do accept walk-ins and same-day bookings based on availability, but to guarantee your preferred time slot and kayak type (tandems sell out first!), book online through our FareHarbor booking system or call (808)498-1894. Same-day bookings: call us directly for the fastest response.

What's your cancellation policy?

We offer free cancellation with a full refund up to 24 hours before your scheduled rental. Cancellations within 24 hours may be subject to a fee. If weather conditions are unsafe (small craft advisories, high surf, dangerous winds), we will proactively contact you to reschedule or cancel with a full refund — your safety is our priority and you'll never pay for a weather-canceled rental. No-shows are charged the full rental amount. Read full terms →

Can I add snorkel gear or other beach equipment?

Yes! Add individual items to any kayak rental: snorkel set (mask, fins, snorkel) — $15/day, stand-up paddleboard (SUP) — $45/4hrs or $65/day, beach chairs — $8/day, coolers — $10/day, and beach umbrellas — $10/day. We also rent dry bags and waterproof phone cases. For a full beach day, see our Beach Gear Rentals page for complete combo packages. Add items during online booking or mention them at check-in.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept all major credit/debit cards — Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover — through our online booking system (FareHarbor). In-shop we also accept cash and contactless payments (Apple Pay, Google Pay). A valid credit card is required to hold your reservation. Payment is typically processed at the time of booking. For walk-in rentals, payment is taken at check-in.

🏝 Kayaking Destinations

Where can I kayak from your shop?

Our Kailua shop is centrally located on the Windward Coast, giving you access to Oahu's absolute best kayaking destinations. Top spots include:

  • 🌊 Kailua Bay to the Mokulua Islands — 2 min drive; 1 mile paddle; turquoise water, seabird sanctuary
  • 🌁 Chinaman's Hat (Mokoli'i) at Kualoa — 30 min drive; 500 yard shallow crossing; hike to summit views
  • 🏝 Kaneohe Sandbar (Ahu o Laka) — 25 min drive; 1.5 mile paddle; Hawaii's "floating beach" at low tide
  • 🌳 Kahana River & Bay — 40 min drive; calm river valley paddling with jungle scenery
  • 🤿 Sharks Cove, North Shore — 50 min drive; world-class snorkeling (summer only, May-October)

Unlike shops that limit you to one bay, our self-transport model means you can take your rental anywhere on Oahu. See our Oahu launch guide →

Can I kayak to the Mokulua Islands?

Absolutely! The Mokulua Islands (The Mokes) are the quintessential Kailua kayaking experience — about a 1-mile paddle across stunning Kailua Bay to Moku Nui, a protected seabird sanctuary. You can land on the beach (permit required during nesting season — we provide these for guided tours), explore tide pools teeming with marine life, and find Queen's Bath — a natural saltwater pool on the island's back side with incredible ocean views. For self-guided rentals, please check current landing regulations, as access may be restricted during seabird nesting periods. Learn more about Kailua kayaking →

Can I go to Kaneohe Sandbar?

Yes — and it's spectacular! Kaneohe Sandbar (Ahu o Laka) is a 1.5-mile paddle across protected Kaneohe Bay from He'eia Kea Pier. At low tide, the sandbar emerges as Hawaii's "floating beach" — you anchor your kayak and wade in waist-deep turquoise water surrounded by the dramatic Ko'olau Mountains. Check tide charts before you go — the sandbar is best experienced 2 hours before or after low tide. About a 25-minute scenic drive from our shop. Kaneohe Sandbar guide →

Is Chinaman's Hat beginner-friendly?

Yes — it's one of the best beginner ocean kayaking experiences on Oahu! The paddle from Kualoa Regional Park to Chinaman's Hat (Mokoli'i) is only about 500 yards across shallow reef (often knee-to-waist deep), making it feel safe and approachable. Once you land on the small beach, it's a short 15-minute hike to the summit for incredible 360° views of Kaneohe Bay and the Ko'olau Mountains. We recommend going in the morning when winds are calmest. Check the tide — low tide makes the crossing even shallower and easier. Chinaman's Hat guide →

Where's the best snorkeling near Kailua?

The best snorkeling spots accessible from our Kailua shop:

  • 🧂 Lanikai Beach reef — 10 min drive; calm, clear water with abundant tropical fish and occasional sea turtles
  • 🧂 Flat Island (Popoia) — accessible by kayak in Kailua Bay; rocky shoreline with diverse marine life
  • 🧂 Sharks Cove, North Shore — 50 min drive; rated one of the top 12 shore dives in the world during summer (May-October); calm, shallow, and teeming with fish

Add snorkel gear to your rental for $15/day. Sharks Cove snorkeling guide →

How far is Lanikai Beach from your shop?

Lanikai Beach is just a 6-minute drive (1.5 miles) from our shop at 134B Hamakua Dr. It's consistently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world — powdery white sand and calm, clear turquoise water. Parking note: Lanikai has no public lot — parking is limited to street parking in the residential neighborhood, so arrive early (before 8am on weekends). Alternatively, launch kayaks from Kailua Beach Park (2 min from our shop, with a free parking lot) and paddle to Lanikai in about 20 minutes. Lanikai Beach guide →

⚠️ Safety & Conditions

When is the best time to kayak on Oahu?

The best time to kayak is early morning, typically 7-10am, when winds are calmest and the ocean surface is glassy. Hawaiian trade winds typically pick up around 11am-1pm, making the return paddle more challenging if you're heading into the wind. Seasonally: summer (May-October) brings calmer conditions on all sides of the island, while winter (November-April) brings larger north swells — but the Windward side (Kailua, Kaneohe, Kualoa) is generally paddleable year-round thanks to the protective barrier reef. Always check the daily marine forecast before heading out. Check our tide guides →

What weather cancels a rental?

We monitor conditions daily and will cancel or reschedule your rental if there are: small craft advisories, high surf warnings (waves 8ft+), dangerous wind conditions (sustained 20+ knots), lightning, or flash flood warnings for river routes. Light Hawaiian rain usually doesn't cancel — you're getting wet anyway! If we need to cancel for weather, you'll receive a full refund or free reschedule. Call us at (808)498-1894 if you're uncertain about conditions on your rental day — we're happy to give an honest assessment.

Are there sharks in Oahu's waters?

Yes, sharks are present in Hawaiian waters — it's their natural habitat and they're an important part of the marine ecosystem. However, shark incidents involving kayakers are extremely rare. The species most commonly seen are reef tip sharks and sandbar sharks, which are generally not aggressive toward humans. We recommend: avoid paddling at dawn/dusk, stay away from river mouths after heavy rain (murky water attracts sharks), and don't paddle with open wounds. Thousands of people safely kayak Oahu's waters every year.

Do I need to know how to swim?

We strongly recommend that all kayakers know how to swim. While our USCG-approved life vests will keep you afloat, you should be comfortable in the water in case you capsize — which is rare on our stable sit-on-top kayaks but is always a possibility in ocean conditions. If you're not a confident swimmer, choose our calm-water options: the Kahana River tour (flat, protected river paddling) or Kaneohe Sandbar (shallow, protected bay). Read our safety guide →

What should I bring on my kayak trip?

We recommend packing:

  • 🌊 Reef-safe sunscreen — chemical sunscreens harm Hawaii's coral reefs (mineral-based only, please!)
  • 💧 At least 1 liter of water per person — more on hot days or longer paddles
  • 🍔 Snacks in a soft-sided cooler (no glass containers on the beach)
  • 👟 Water shoes or sandals with straps — you'll be walking on reef and rocks (reef shoes are ideal)
  • 👒 Hat + polarized sunglasses — polarized lenses help you spot turtles and reefs below the surface
  • 👗 Rash guard or light long-sleeve shirt — sun protection that stays on in the water
  • 📱 Waterproof phone case — in addition to our provided dry bag, for double protection
  • 🧾 Towel and change of clothes — leave them in your car for after

See our complete what-to-bring checklist →

Is it safe to kayak alone?

We recommend kayaking with at least one partner for safety — that's why our tandem kayaks are so popular (and they're more stable in ocean chop!). If you do go solo in a single kayak: stick to well-trafficked areas like Kailua Bay, let someone know your route and expected return time, carry a phone in the provided dry bag, stay within sight of shore, and avoid paddling in offshore winds that could push you out to sea. Our waterproof route maps include emergency contact numbers. Call us if conditions change or you need assistance. See self-guided tour options →
