Kaneohe Sandbar — Self-Guided Kayak Adventure
Paddle to Oahu’s Floating Beach — The Kaneohe Sandbar
The Kaneohe Sandbar (Ahu o Laka) is a sunken reef that emerges at low tide to create a beach in the middle of Kaneohe Bay. At high tide, the water is waist-deep; at low tide, the sand is fully exposed, surrounded by turquoise water.
How to Kayak Kaneohe Bay — Legally
Hawaii State Law prohibits commercial delivery and guided tours in Kaneohe Bay. But private boaters are welcome. Here's how it works:
1. Rent from our Kailua shop — we're outside the Kaneohe Bay zone. We'll help load your vehicle with foam pads or rigid racks.
2. Drive yourself to He'eia Kea Pier (~20 min drive). You're now a private recreational boater — fully legal.
3. Launch and enjoy the sandbar. We include a tide chart and safety guide with every rental.
Active Oahu delivers your kayak to Heʻeia Kea Pier — the closest launch point. It’s a 1.5-mile paddle across protected Kaneohe Bay.
The Experience
- Paddle out: ~45 minutes across calm, protected bay water
- Anchor up: Kayak anchor included
- Hang out: Wading, snorkeling, volleyball — Hawaii’s natural water park
Tide Tips
- Low tide: Full sand exposure — walk around, set up chairs
- Mid tide: Waist-deep water — perfect for wading and floating
- High tide: Sandbar submerges — plan for low-to-mid tide window
Did you know? Kaneohe Bay is the largest sheltered body of water in Hawaii, protected by Oahu’s only barrier reef.
