Kailua Kayaking — Self-Guided Mokulua Islands Tour
Paddle to the Mokulua Islands — Oahu’s Iconic Kayak Trip
The Mokulua Islands ("The Mokes") are the twin islets visible from Kailua Beach — paddling to them is the most iconic kayak experience on Oahu. Active Oahu provides everything: kayak, life vest, paddle, dry bag, and a detailed route map.
This is a self-guided tour — you set the pace. The paddle is ~1 mile each way across protected Kailua Bay.
The Route
- Launch: Kailua Beach Park boat ramp (closest to the Mokes)
- Paddle out: 30–45 minutes depending on wind
- Landing: Moku Nui’s protected south-facing beach
- Explore: Tide pools, Queens Bath natural pool, seabird sanctuary views
What’s Included
- Sit-on-top ocean kayak (single or tandem)
- Life vest (USCG approved)
- Paddle with leash
- Dry bag for phone/keys
- Bonus: Snorkel gear add-on available
Pro tip: Go early (7–8 AM launch). The tradewinds pick up by 11 AM. About 65,000 people kayak to the Mokes annually — the earlier you go, the more you’ll have it to yourself.
