Ne Mokulua, Kailua's Twin Islands near Lanikai Beach

On this tour, you’ll be heading towards the breathtaking Mokulua Islands, also known as Kailua’s Twin Islands. These two charming islets off Oahu’s windward coast are a must-see. It’s a scenic 60-80 minute paddle from Kailua Beach Park over protected reefs and turquoise water to the main island, Moku Nui, the State Wildlife Sanctuary. Weather permitting, we will hike around the island’s backside or venture to the queen’s bath and explore tide pools.

Remember to stick to the trails and keep the island pristine by disposing of any litter properly. Moku Nui is not only a natural paradise but also a bird sanctuary, especially lively during the spring with adorable fluffy chicks. Let’s be respectful of the local wildlife – they’re cute and cuddly looking but rely on the island’s seclusion for their safety. Please look, but don’t touch or disturb the wildlife. The Mokulua islands are also a prime spot to glimpse the endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal. The seals often rest on the sandy shore of Moku Nui after sometimes swimming hundreds of miles, navigating the deep ocean channels between the Hawaiian islands.

What to Expect

Please meet at the Kailua Storefront to check in 1 hour before your tour starts. Here you’ll meet your guide and receive a safety demo, a description of the route, kayaking lessons, and a brief cultural history. From there we will guide you through using the e-bike and provide you with all the necessary equipment to have fun, including lifejackets.

You will then ride to Kailua Beach Park (a 7-minute ride) with your guide and then meet your guide in the water with your kayak and gear where your tour will begin. Your guide will direct you on how to get in and out of your kayak safely and how to paddle effectively. If you’re feeling adventurous you may be able to stop at Popoia Island on the way to Moku Nui as well as stop at Lanikai Beach to snorkel, just ask your guide. On the way out to the mokes, your guide will explain the local cultural and historical significance of these islands as well as the animal life that calls them home. Maybe even seeing a sea turtle or a monk seal.

Once on Moku Nui island, your guide will help you explore and hike around, visiting Queen’s Bath and its surrounding tidepools and possibly the back side of the island if the weather permits. You will also be served a fresh lunch on the beach there.

As you head back on your kayak you get spectacular views of Kailua Bay and Lanikai and talk story with your guide about this special place. When you return to Kailua Beach you will simply strap the kayak back on your car and meet the guide at the Kailua Storefront where you will be given a fresh lunch and shave ice.
