Activity Overview

On the Kawela Bay Self-Guided Kayak Tour, you'll experience one of Oʻahu's most serene paddling destinations. Kawela Bay sits on the North Shore, directly across from Turtle Bay Resort, and offers calm, protected waters thanks to a natural breakwater and surrounding reef. It's one of the safest and most accessible places on the North Shore for kayaking, making it ideal for beginners, families with children, and anyone who wants a relaxing day on the water.

The bay is famous for its resident Hawaiian green sea turtles — honu — that feed on the abundant limu (seaweed) growing on the rocky shoreline. It's common to see them surfacing for air right next to your kayak, and if you're lucky, you might spot them basking on the sand at the water's edge. The turtles are protected by law, so please observe from a respectful distance and never chase or touch them.

Kawela Bay also has a Hollywood pedigree. Parts of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall were filmed along this stretch of shoreline. Keep an eye out — you might recognize the beach from the big screen.

What to Expect on Your Kawela Bay Self-Guided Kayak Tour

You'll start your day at our Kailua storefront (134B Hamakua Dr) where our friendly team will help you strap the kayak onto your vehicle with roof pads and straps (they fit most cars — sedans, SUVs, vans). You'll sign a liability waiver and receive a personal kayaking lesson, safety demo, and detailed directions for the scenic 40-minute drive up the windward coast to Kawela Bay.

The drive itself is stunning — you'll pass Kualoa Ranch (another movie-famous spot), Lāʻie Point, and the shrimp trucks of Kahuku before reaching Kawela Bay. Parking is along the highway pull-off near the farm stand and Kula Shave Ice area. We recommend arriving early for the best parking and calmest morning paddling conditions.

Once you launch, you'll be paddling in water that's typically glassy calm, especially in the summer months (May through September). The bay is sheltered and shallow near the edges, so you can see the sandy bottom and occasionally spot reef fish. Paddle around the bay, explore the shoreline, or just float and watch for turtles surfacing nearby.

When you're done paddling, grab a refreshing treat at Kula Shave Ice — it's right across the street. The Kahuku food trucks (famous for garlic shrimp) and Banzai Bowls at Sunset Beach are a short drive south along Kamehameha Highway. Check out our Eating Your Way from Windward to North Shore guide for our favorite food stops along the route.

Combine with Sharks Cove Snorkeling

Since our kayak rental is full-day with after-hours return, you've got plenty of time to explore more of the North Shore. Sharks Cove is just a 10-minute drive south — one of the best shore-snorkeling spots on Oʻahu, with tide pools and incredible marine life (and yes, it's named after the reef shape, not actual sharks). Paddle Kawela Bay in the morning, grab lunch at the food trucks, then snorkel Sharks Cove in the afternoon. It's the perfect North Shore day.

Ocean Conditions and Advice

Kawela Bay is one of the safest kayaking spots on Oʻahu. The waters are protected and calm in most conditions. However, ocean conditions can change, and North Shore winter swells (November through March) can occasionally affect the outer edges of the bay. We recommend this tour year-round for paddlers of all skill levels, but always check conditions before you head out.

Children of all ages are welcome — the calm waters make it great for families. Life jackets are provided for all participants and are required for children.

If there are storms or unusually high surf, we'll notify you as soon as we know and can reschedule or offer a full refund.

Feel free to check out our Cancellation Policy for more info.
