Kalama Beach Bodyboarding Adventure
Kalama Beach is the perfect destination for a laid-back beach day. With its soft sandy beach and rolling waves, it makes a great adventure for families. Whether you want to hang out in the waves, go bodyboarding, or chill on the beach with a cooler and snacks, Kalama Beach offers many highlights worth making a trip over to experience for yourself.
Arriving and Parking at Kalama Beach
You’ll begin your adventure-filled day by navigating to Kalama Beach Park where there is a small parking lot near the beach. We recommend getting there early to get a spot in the lot. If the lot is full, there is typically plenty of parking on the side streets near the beach park. From the parking lot you’ll see a dirt path that will lead you to the beach. Alternatively, you can rent e-bikes from our storefront in Kailua and cruise down to Kalama Beach Park for a more convenient and scenic way to get there–plus you won’t have to worry about battling for a parking spot! Our e-bikes come with an optional attachment to carry your boogie board (which you can also rent from us). If you are arriving on an e-bike you’ll need to lock it around a tree or sign post, as there are no designated bike racks at the park.
Making a Day Out of Kalama Beach
Once your feet hit the sand at Kalama beach, you’ll see why this beach is a local favorite. This beach is a great place to set up for the day, especially with the amenities it offers. There is a lifeguard stand open from 8:00am-6:30pm to provide you with peace of mind throughout the day. There are also bathrooms and outdoor showers located between the beach and the park. After setting up camp, it’s time to let the fun begin! Kalama beach is perfect for novice body boarding. The rolling waves make ideal conditions for older kids and adults to catch some waves without the intensity of bigger surf found at other beaches. Make sure to bring a cooler with food and drinks and any other beach essentials you’ll need throughout the day. We have coolers, umbrellas, beach chairs, and more available for rent at our shop. Looking for some good foodie spots around Kalama Beach? We recommend the Sunrise Shack for fresh fruit smoothies and acai bowls or Bob’s Pizzeria–both are right down the street from Kalama Beach.
What to Watch Out For
Blue bottle jellyfish are common at Kalama Beach, as the wind often brings them close to shore. They are small jellyfish that leave a mild sting. At our storefront you can purchase jellyfish sting treatment and reef safe sunscreen that also acts as a barrier to jellyfish. It is also important to be cautious with young children at Kalama beach and make sure they are always being supervised. The shoreline can be uneven and there are often divots and sudden drops that can be dangerous for young children.
Concluding the Adventure
If you rented gear from our shop, you’ll return to our storefront where our adventure guides will help you unload. They will also be happy to give you tips and recommendations on where to go for your next adventure or meal. We also have bathrooms and an outdoor shower you can use before you take off.
