Self-Guided E-Bike Tour of Kailua
Route Map Overview
Cruise the best of windward Oahu on two wheels. This ~8-mile self-guided e-bike route takes you from the laid-back streets of Kailua Town to the postcard-perfect shores of Lanikai Beach, up to the panoramic Pillbox Trail overlook, and back through Kailua Beach Park. With an electric bike, the mostly flat terrain is a breeze — plan on 2–3 hours at a relaxed pace, with plenty of stops for photos, snacks, and swimming.
The route is designed for riders of all fitness levels. E-bike pedal assist flattens the few gentle hills, and dedicated bike lanes on most roads keep you safe and confident. Grab your rental, your helmet, and your sense of adventure — Kailua is waiting.

Stop 1: Kailua Beach Park — Your Launch Point
Start your ride at Kailua Beach Park, just a five-minute pedal from our shop at 134B Hamakua Dr. This 2.5-mile stretch of powdery white sand is consistently rated one of America's best beaches. Park your e-bike at the bike racks near the main pavilion and take a moment to soak in the view of Flat Island and the Mokulua Islands on the horizon.
The beach park connects directly to the Kailua bike path, a paved shared-use path that runs along the coastline. It's the perfect warm-up — flat, scenic, and car-free. Follow the path east toward Lanikai for about a mile, then merge onto Mokulua Drive where the bike lane continues.
Stop 2: Lanikai Beach — Morning Light & Parking Tips
Ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world, Lanikai Beach is a must-see. The name means "heavenly sea" in Hawaiian, and the turquoise water backed by the twin Mokulua Islands lives up to the name. Pro tip: ride early — the morning light on the water is absolutely magical, and you'll beat the crowds.
Parking on an e-bike is easy: There are no parking lots in the Lanikai neighborhood, which means car visitors circle endlessly for street parking. On an e-bike, you simply roll up to any public beach access path (look for the numbered right-of-way signs between homes), lock your bike to a street sign or bike rack, and walk through. No parking stress, no tickets.
Stop 3: Pillbox Trail — Lock Up & Hike Up
Also known as the Kaiwa Ridge Trail, the Lanikai Pillbox hike is a short but steep 0.9-mile (one-way) trail that rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views of Lanikai Beach, Kailua Bay, the Mokulua Islands, and the Ko'olau Mountains. The trailhead is on Kaelepulu Drive, just a quick pedal from Lanikai Beach.
Bike parking for the Pillbox Trail: Lock your e-bike to the guardrail or fence at the trailhead entrance on Kaelepulu Drive. Use the included bike lock — the hike takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour round-trip. Wear sneakers or hiking shoes; the trail is uneven and can be slippery after rain. The first pillbox (a former WWII military observation post) is reached in about 15–20 minutes, with the second just 10 minutes beyond.
Stop 4: Kailua Town — Local Eats & Refueling
After working up an appetite, pedal back into Kailua Town for some of the best local food on the windward side. All these spots are within easy biking distance and have bike racks nearby:
- Over Easy (418 Kuulei Rd) — Famous for their creative Hawaiian breakfasts and brunch. Try the Kailua Pig Eggs Benedict or crispy edge pancakes.
- Kalapawai Café & Deli (750 Kailua Rd) — A Kailua institution since 1932. Grab a gourmet sandwich, salad, or coffee. Perfect for a quick, quality lunch.
- Island Snow (130 Kailua Rd) — Cool off with authentic Hawaiian shave ice. President Obama's favorite spot — try the "Obama Blend" (lemon-lime, cherry, passion fruit).
- Maui Mike's Fire-Roasted Chicken (539 Kailua Rd) — Quick, affordable plate lunch with juicy fire-roasted chicken. A local favorite for post-adventure refueling.
Bonus Extension: Kawai Nui Marsh Bike Path
If you have extra time and battery, extend your ride to the Kawai Nui Marsh — Hawaii's largest remaining wetland and a designated Ramsar site. A paved multi-use path runs along the northern edge of the marsh, offering views of native waterbirds like the Hawaiian coot, Hawaiian stilt, and Hawaiian duck. The path is flat, peaceful, and adds about 3 miles round-trip to your route. Access it from Kaha Street or through the Kawai Nui Neighborhood Park.
Safety Tips for Your E-Bike Tour
- Use bike lanes: Most of the route has dedicated bike lanes, especially on Kailua Road and Mokulua Drive. Stay in the lane and use hand signals at turns.
- Sun protection is essential: The Hawaiian sun is strong year-round. Apply reef-safe sunscreen, wear sunglasses, and bring a hat for stops. Consider riding in the morning (7–10 AM) to avoid peak UV and heat.
- Stay hydrated: Bring at least 32 oz of water per person. There are water fountains at Kailua Beach Park and refill stops at cafes in Kailua Town.
- Lock your bike: Always lock your e-bike when leaving it unattended, even for quick stops. Use the included lock — thread it through the frame and a fixed object.
- E-bike battery: The battery easily lasts the full 8-mile route with plenty to spare, but avoid using maximum assist continuously if you plan the Kawai Nui extension.
- Respect pedestrians: Yield to walkers and joggers on shared paths, especially along the Kailua Beach bike path. A friendly "on your left!" goes a long way.
