About Electric Beach
Electric Beach is a local favorite located just North of Ko’Olina. It’s about a 45 minute drive from Waikiki and 30 minutes from the North Shore, it is accessible by car or the city bus. It got its nickname from the HECO powerplant which uses a pipe that extends into the ocean to cool down the plant. As a result, it shoots out warm water into the ocean, creating a unique microenvironment that attracts an impressive array of sealife. You won’t find anywhere quite like Electric Beach on Oahu.
What to Expect
Your adventure at Electric Beach begins by parking at Kahe Point Beach Park, where you’ll find amenities including bathrooms, an outdoor shower to rinse off, and a lifeguard stand, giving you an added layer of reassurance as you get ready to dive in the clear ocean waters and explore. The beach itself may be small, but it is unmatched when it comes to natural beauty and underwater excitement.
Be aware that the shoreline can have a powerful shorebreak depending on the conditions. Due to the current and shorebreak, snorkeling at Electric Beach is best suited for confident swimmers and experienced snorkelers.The reef lies approximately 100-200 yards from shore, so be prepared to swim for an extended period of time as you experience the magical underwater experience. Federal law states that you need to stay at least 50 yards away from dolphins and 10 feet away from sea turtles. Observing these creatures from a distance ensures they remain safe and wild.
